Today's Diabetes Daily Dose comes from Tonya the founder of Tips4Type1, $10 of every sale goes towards finding a cure for diabetes! A truly inspirational story!
"Thank you, Laura, for inviting me to write a guest post, to share with your readers a little bit about our fundraiser for the Diabetes Research Institute."
I'm Tonya Homme, and this summer, my family and I started a fundraiser called Tips4Type1. We are selling 2 shades of nail polish in the Diabetes Awareness colors of SILVER and BLUE, to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes and also to raise money to support Type 1 Diabetes research. We are donating $10 of every sale to the Diabetes Research Institute. Our silver polish is called 'TIPS OF STEEL', to honor those precious fingertips that endure so much, and our blue polish is called 'TRUE BLUE HOPE', because we have HOPE that a CURE for Type 1 will be found soon.
To find out more and to purchase some of our polish, please visit our web site: HERE You can also find us on facebook at, Tips4Type1, and on twitter, I'm @T1Mommy.
Our life with Type 1 began on October 6, 2008, when our then 23-month-old daughter was diagnosed. She is the first and only person on either side of our family to have Type 1. To say we were in shock would be the understatement of the century. Those first few months are sort of a blur in my memory now, which is probably a good thing.
Ever since our daughter's diagnosis 3 years ago, I have been a mom on a mission. I kept searching for an idea, something we could do, to help our daughter and everyone living with Type 1. One day, while searching the internet, I discovered the Diabetes Research Institute. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to check out their web site: www.diabetesresearch.org, to learn more about the collaborative, CURE-focused research taking place there. We believe they are "The Best Hope for a Cure," just like their mission statement says. While new devices are great, all we really want for our daughter and for all of our Type 1 friends is for it to just. go. away. Forever. We want a CURE.
My idea came last year, when I noticed that many people in the DOC (Diabetes Online Community) were painting their nails blue throughout November to promote Type 1 Awareness. As we are in constant 'Diabetes Advocacy' mode, our nails are painted silver and blue all year round! Type 1 is a widely misunderstood disease. In addition to raising money for research, it is our hope that by wearing these colors, we can start conversations that will help educate others about what it's like to live with Type 1 Diabetes. On our Tip4Type1 web site, we have also included resources to help educate others. There is a page called 'Myths/Truths', which clarifies some of the commonly held misconceptions about Type 1, and there is also a 'Symptoms' page, explaining the warning signs of Type 1.
We would love it if you would check out our site, and if you would share it with your family and friends. The more people who know about Type 1, the better it will be for our loved ones who must face the difficult challenge of this disease 24/7/365. They are our heroes and we will not stop fighting for a cure until it is found. Thank you, and thanks again, Laura, for inviting me to share our story.
