Making homemade ornaments with the kids is always a Christmas tradition in our household. Applesauce cinnamon ornaments are easy to make and smell so good! The cinnamon fragrance is long lasting which makes these little ornaments a great gift for years to come.
Look for cinnamon and applesauce at a discount store to make these ornaments really economical.
Applesauce Cinnamon Ornament Supplies
- 2 Cups Ground Cinnamon
- 2 Cups Applesauce
- Waxed Paper
- Rolling Pin
- Cookie Cutters
- Straw
In a large bowl mix the applesauce and cinnamon. The dough should be thick- kind of like playdough. Once the applesauce and cinnamon are well incorporated, it is easiest to use your hands to finish the mixing. Form dough into a ball.
Place the ball of dough onto a piece of waxed paper. Place another piece of waxed paper on top and use a rolling pin to roll out the dough. You want the dough to at least be 1/4″ thick. If the dough is too thin the ornament will be too delicate when dried.
Once the dough is rolled out, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. If you plan on hanging the ornaments with ribbon use a straw to make a hole. Place the cut outs on a cookie sheet. Dry in the window seal for about 3 days- flipping them over every day. If you are in a hurry, you can bake them in the oven at 200 degrees for 3 hours or so.
To give the ornaments a little more color, you can hot glue buttons or other decor onto them. A colorful ribbon adds flare too.
