It's with this in mind that Dollar General chose Sparky Edwards, a retired and decorated military veteran, as its Every Day Hero for June 2013. Sparky, who was once an at-risk teen, changed his life thanks to the National Guard youth academy. He earned his GED, entered the military, and now is a successful business owner, pursuing his PhD, and volunteers by mentoring at-risk teenagers.
