Today is a day that I will never forget! Two years ago on this day Hailey was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. And for all parents that have went through this you understand how I feel.
Our story starts off that most others. We had noticed that she was using the bathroom more frequently than usual, as far as drinking more we never noticed because kids are always drinking like fish! After her teacher had called to tell us she was using the bathroom more at school as well I decided it was time to take her to the doctor. I had spoken with Hailey's step mom and we had honestly thought it to be some sort of bladder infection, Diabetes just NEVER crossed our mind. So November 9th 2009 we took Hailey to the doctor for a bladder infection to only find out it was Diabetes!! I'll never forget when he told me, Hailey was sitting in my lap and I just cried and cried(I was hysterical) and held on to her. He continued to tell us we needed to get her to Vanderbilt as quick as we could to get her set up on an IV, etc. That night was a long and scary one for all of us.
The months to follow we all took the classes and many doctor appointments to learn everything we needed to know on how to manage her diabetes, to count the carbs, how much carb to insulin ratio.Hailey didn't mind the finger pricking all the time but shots were not her favorite. So about 6 or 7 months later she was very happy to find out she was getting a pump. With the pump came more classes so all involved would know how to use it. Hailey's a champ at it! It's just like another part of her body!!
All had been well until March of this year! We had all got the stomach virus of some sort, stomach aches, vomiting, etc. It only lasted about a day with us all except Hailey. Hailey continued to be sick, still vomiting! We took her to our local ER and after some time and tests and talking with her doctor at Vanderbilt they were pretty sure Hailey had DKA. Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Long story short DKA is when ketones get into her blood/urine stream do to not enough insulin and the acid starts eating the fat, pretty much her body was eating itself from the inside! The worst fear for a mother is to see her daughter being taken my ambulance on an IV and Vanderbilt was an hour or so away. And yes DKA is deadly!!! Hailey was put into ICU and medicine was started. Thank God we had caught it soon at it was treatable, she was going to be fine.
Hailey may have some bumps in the road but she never once lets it stop her. She is your normal 9 year old girl. She's an Accelerated Reader with Honor Roll grades, a comic to say the least, an avid Softball player, a daughter, granddaughter, sister, a teammate, a friend. She is my inspiration in life. She is the main reason I strive for a CURE!!

My daughter was diagnosed with t1 diabetes in May of this year. Are there any ways to save money on all of the supplies (other than generic brands)? I have searched all over and have not had much luck finding help. Everything I have found doesn't do my family any good b/c they claim we make too much money. We are only an average family and I don't think they realize how expensive it all is. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Signing up for your drugstore reward card is a great way to save. I know Rite Aid has a pretty good program. I know sometimes coupons come out the the One Touch test strips, not often but some. If your daughter has a pump you can get in touch with CCS Medical, www.ccsmed.com 1-800-260-8193, that's were we get all my daughter pump supplies but I'm pretty sure they have other supplies as well. Hope that helps a little
